abstract

abstract stochastic model for synthetic data generation is not available for daily flows of intermittent streams. such a model is required in the planning and operation of structures on an intermittent stream for purposes where short time flow fluctuations are important. in this study a model is developed for such a case. the model consists of four steps: determination of the days on which flow occurs, determination of the days on which a flow increment occurs, determination of the magnitude of the flow increment, and calculation of the flow decrement on days when the flow is reduced. the first two steps are modeled by markov chain. in the third step, flow increments on the rising limb of the hydrograph are assumed to be gamma distributed. in the last step an exponential recession is used with two different coefficients. parameters of the model are estimated from the observed daily stream flow data for each month of the year. the model is applied to a daily flow series of 20 years’ length. it is seen that the model can preserve the short-term characteristics (the ascension and recession curves and peaks) of the hydrograph in addition to the long-term characteristics (mean, variance, skew ness, and zero flow percentage).

Flood Flow Frequency Model Selection Using L-moment Method in Arid and Semi Arid Regions of Iran

Statistical frequency analysis is the most common procedure for the analysis of flood data at a gauged location thatin first step it is needed to select a model to represent the population. Among them, the central moment has been themost common and widely used, and with the using of computers, the application of the maximum likelihood hasincreased. This research was carried out in order to reco...

Trend analysis and detection of precipitation fluctuations in arid and semi-arid regions

The most important impacts of climate change relate to temperature and precipitation. Precipitation is particularly important, because changes in precipitation patterns may lead to floods or droughts in different areas. Also, precipitation is a major factor in agriculture and in recent years interest has increased in learning about precipitation variability for periods of months to annual and s...

Investigating the interaction between rivers and sand dunes in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Fluvial and aeolian processes are important factors in changing the surface of morphology in the Earth. When rivers and sand dunes meet, the transportation of sediment  between them can lead to one of the systems or both  of them change. With their connection between river sediment and wind systems there would be lots of reactions, but very little has been st...

The Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran

Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...
